Colonel (RET) David Eberly is a native of Brazil, Indiana, and entered the Air Force upon graduation from Indiana University in 1969. After earning his pilot wings at Columbus AFB, Mississippi, he and Barbara served in 18 locations around the world including three tours at the Pentagon and finally in Ottawa, Canada, where he was the United States Defense Representative in the American Embassy.

As an airman, he has flown over 3400 hours with tours in fighter squadrons in the Philippines, Germany, Southwest Asia, and the United States. During Desert Shield and Desert Storm (1990-1991), he served as the Director of Operations of the Fourth Wing (provisional), flying the F-15E in Oman and from Saudi Arabia. He participated in the initial air strike into Iraq. On the fourth night of the campaign, he was shot down while flying a Strike Eagle. After evading for three nights, he was eventually captured on the Syrian border and imprisoned in Baghdad. As the senior allied POW, he was finally repatriated on March 5, 1991.

Colonel Eberly earned numerous military decorations during his twenty-eight year career. His combat awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, The Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart. In May 1991, he was named as a Distinguished Hoosier and appointed a Sagamore of the Wabash. On June 9, 1997, Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon presented him the Hoosier Heroism Award. Colonel and Mrs. Eberly represented the Gulf War POWs at the opening of the National POW Memorial in Andersonville. Following the Gulf, he had appearances on Good Morning America, America Tonight with Charles Kuralt, and the CNN special on the one anniversary of the conflict. In 1999, he was interviewed twice on Dateline and continues to be featured in specials on The History Channel and The Learning Channel.
The Eberlys now reside in Williamsburg, Virginia and are members of The Williamsburg United Methodist Church. He is a life member of the Order of Daedalians, Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, a member of the Military Order of the Carabao and serves on the Board of Directors of the USO.
